SPORTS MEDICINE is a branch of medicine that includes a broad team of health care professionals who work with all aspects of injuries and illneses related to sport, exercise, or recreational activity.
ATHLETIC TRAINING is included within the sports medicine team. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergent, acute and chronic medical conditions. Athletic training is practiced by athletic trainers, specialized health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize the activity and sports participation.

Our Sports Medicine team includes Chris Leonard, Athletic Trainer and Drs. Damian Mizera, MD and William Ralston, DO, orthopaedic surgeons at Greater Regional Medical Center.
Chris Leonard is a nationally certified athletic trainer, licensed in the state of Iowa and a certified strength and conditioning specialist. He is a graduate of Iowa State University with degrees in Animal Science and Athletic Training. His athletic training assignments while at ISU included football, men's track and field, men's hockey and Ames High School. Following graduation, Chris worked at Waco High School in Texas as an athletic trainer and also worked as an athletic training intern with the Dallas Cowboys.
