What is Audiology
Audiology is a service line that deals with the sense of hearing. An audiologist is the primary healthcare professional who evaluates, diagnose, treats, and manages hearing loss and balance disorders.
Should I make an appointment?
Most people do not know when it is the right time to see an audiologist or to get hearing aids. There are many questions surrounding hearing issues. Do I really need hearing aids? How expensive are they? Will they make a difference in my hearing? Greater Regional Health's audiologist Ryan Denny, Au.D., CCC-A gives you 6 reasons why you should focus on your hearing health.
Missing out on conversation
Numerous studies have shown that hearing loss can lead to social isolation and depression. Restoring hearing can improve one's enjoyment of life.
Prevent Fall Risks
Did you know that your balance and gait are also impacted by your ability to hear? Your hearing plays a significant role in your awareness of your environment. For this reason, hearing loss can cause you to be less aware of your surroundings and more prone to falling.
Overall Ear Health
It is always good to have a baseline hearing test! Factors like wax buildup, abnormal growths, and infections can cause your risk for hearing loss. Have your ears checked regularly.
If you suffer from unexplained hearing loss it could be connected to a more serious health issue. Studies have shown that individuals with diabetes are twice as likely to suffer from hearing loss.
Deterioration of your mental state and cognitive abilities
Research is continuing to show the links between hearing loss and both dementia and Alzheimer's Disease. There is almost triple the amount of risk for these issues in people that suffer from even moderate hearing loss.
Ringing in the ears if often a symptom of hearing loss. If you are experiencing ringing, buzzing, hissing or humming it may be a good idea to have a baseline hearing test.
What would I expect at an appointment at Greater Regional?
When you make an appointment with our audiologist Ryan Denny, his philosophy of care stands out.
Quality care for my patients is my priority. My philosophy has always been a hybrid between holistic patient care and family-centered approaches. It is important to understand that hearing loss affects both the person and significant others. Unfortunately, there is an associated stigma attached with hearing loss that can make it difficult to accept for some patients. My goal is to educate, counsel, and encourage patients, as well as families to actively participate in hearing healthcare treatment solution.

Hearing Aid Giveaway
We have some exciting news to share! Laura Stearns was the recipient of this year’s hearing aid give away! Laura has been trying out her new devices over the past month with great benefit. Here is what she has to say:
"I never realized just how little I could hear or how much I missed until I received my hearing aids. I wasn't fully present in conversations with friends or family.
My students were telling me or repeating things because I was missing what was being said.
With these hearing aids, I'm more attentive and involved in conversations."
