Should I make an appointment?

People seek psychiatric help for many reasons. The problems can be sudden, such as a panic attack, frightening hallucinations, thoughts of suicide, or hearing "voices". Or they may be more long-term, such as feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or anxiousness that never seem to lift or problems functioning, causing everyday life to feel distorted or out of control.

What would I expect at an appointment at Greater Regional?

When visiting with Greater Regional's psychiatrist or specially trained psychiatric ARNP, you will see that most medications used are similar to the same way medication is used to treat high blood pressure or diabetes.

After completing thorough evaluations, the psychiatrist or specially trained psychiatric ARNP can prescribe medications to help treat mental disorders. While the precise mechanism of action of psychiatric medications in not fully understood, they may beneficially modulate chemical signaling and communication with the brain, which may reduce some symptoms of psychiatric disorders. Patients on long-term medication treatment will need to meet with their physiatrist periodically to monitor the effectiveness of the medication and any potential side effects.

Is seeing a psychiatrist is the same as seeing a therapist?

No, at Greater Regional Health our psychiatrist and specially trained psychiatric ARNP are trained to use medication as a form of treatment plan.
