What is Pulmonology?

Pulmonology or pneumology is a medical specialty that deals with diseases involving the respiratory tract. It is also known as respirology, respiratory medicine, or chest medicine in some countries and areas. Pulmonology is considered a branch of internal medicine, and is related to intensive care medicine

What is a Pulmonologist?

Internal medicine is the type of medical care that deals with adult health, and pulmonology is one of its many fields. Pulmonologists focus on the respiratory system and diseases that affect it. The respiratory system includes your:

  • Mouth and nose

  • Sinuses

  • Throat (pharynx)

  • Voice box (larynx)

  • Windpipe (trachea)

  • Bronchial tubes

  • Lungs and structures inside of them such as bronchioles and alveoli

  • Diaphragm
