The Greater Regional Healthcare Foundation recognized the need for event and meeting space in Union County and began exploration of the development of an event center in 2018. In 2019 Greater Regional employees were surveyed and asked to rank priorities for community reinvestment initiatives. The top two investments requested by employees were expanding daycare and adding event space.
With this information the Foundation further committed to the development of the project and partnered with Iowa State University to complete a market research analysis to better understand the needs of the community.
In 2020 stakeholders and community members were invited to participate in the survey. The results showed a significant need for event space with a capacity of 300+ and promising utilization numbers. In the fall of 2020 Greater Regional Health acquired the New York Avenue property with the intent to partner with the Foundation to develop the space.
The Summit Event Center will be approximately 15,000 square feet with the ability to seat 500, highway access, and ample parking.
Due to current focus on completion of the Greater Connections Childhood Development Center and on-campus construction projects the Foundation envisions beginning this project in late 2024-25. In the meantime, planning for the interior of the space is underway.
