Pregnancy & Birth

Finding out you are pregnant can be an exciting but nerve-wracking time. Our team is here to help you every step of the way.

Greater Regional Health offers obstetric services from preconception counseling and infertility services, through delivery, and postpartum care. Our obstetric providers will ensure both mother and baby are safely guided through all phases of pregnancy and childbirth. Whether the baby is delivered vaginally or through a planned or emergency caesarian section, our providers are trained to handle any change that is presented during the natural, but sometimes complex process of childbirth. If a C-section is needed, our Surgery Center is down the hall from the Birthing Center.

We offer prenatal classes, breastfeeding resources and individual teaching to help you and your baby get the best start possible. Following delivery, we focus on the health of the mother and child, ensuring that both make the transition into routine daily life.

Prenatal & Breastfeeding Classes

We offer a variety of options for prenatal and breastfeeding classes, both online and in-person. Courses will cover the last trimester of pregnancy, labor, delivery, postpartum, and breastfeeding. These resources, along with individual guidance often help mother and families feel better prepared for delivery and beyond. We want to help you and your baby get the best start possible, ensuring that both make a smooth transition into routine daily life.

FREE online classes are available through Pampers.com. This includes a 9-part series, led by clinical childbirth experts, providing in-depth information for new parents on all stages of childbirth. These classes are available to watch whenever you want!

If you prefer an in-person class, Greater Regional Birthing Center is happy to schedule a time to meet with you at your convenience. This can be private or with your support person!

Accessing Labor and Delivery at GRH: What to Expect Upon Arrival

When you arrive at GRH Birthing Center, you'll find a phone just outside the double doors that connects directly to the OB nurses' station or their work phone. An OB nurse will meet you and allow you to enter. Once inside, a nurse will greet you again, and you will be placed in either a birthing room or a c/s room, depending on your circumstance. If you are not let in immediately upon arrival, the nurse may be busy. The OB nurses are tasked with keeping track of who enters and exits the department.

Comprehensive Room Accommodations

Room accommodations differ for C/S or laboring mothers. There are rooms designated for labor and delivery, and the patient will remain in the same room throughout their stay. These rooms offer extra space and a bed that can be adjusted for delivery. After delivery, the bed will be enhanced with a comfort mattress. A couch that converts into a twin-sized bed is available for the support person of your choice. We also provide various types of birthing balls to suit individual needs or preferences. The bed is equipped with a birthing bar attachment, stirrups, and leg support to assist in the birthing process. All rooms feature a full shower bathroom. The C/S rooms are equipped with a standard hospital bed and include a recliner for the support person.

Monitoring Your Baby

We have several methods to monitor the baby, with the most common being external fetal monitoring, where paddles are placed on the mother's abdomen and secured by elastic straps. We also offer a wireless monitoring system called Monica, which allows mothers more freedom of movement during labor. However, the wireless monitoring may not be suitable for everyone, as it depends on the baby's position and the mother's abdomen. If neither of these options work, we can use an internal monitoring system, known as a fetal scalp electrode, to ensure the safety of both mother and baby during labor and delivery. An OB provider is always available for a laboring patient, though not always in the department; typically, it will be the on-call provider unless a physician has scheduled an induction or c/s. If the patient delivers and the on-call provider changes, another provider may attend to you. If an unplanned c/s is necessary, the provider may also change.

Additional Care for Mom and Baby

All doctors and nurses hold S.T.A.B.L.E. certification (a program focused on the care of ill infants), and we collaborate with hospitals in Des Moines and Omaha if advanced care for the mother or baby is required.

Visitor Guidelines

There are no visitor restrictions except during certain times. When the mother is fully dilated and ready to push, only two support people (visitors) are permitted in the room unless the physician has given prior approval. If the mother receives an epidural during labor, one support person is allowed in the room during the procedure. We also restrict visitors to the support people present at delivery for two hours afterward to facilitate bonding between the baby and mother and to ensure both are stable. Nurses may adjust visiting times to ensure the safety of the mother and baby or at the patient's request. Meals and snacks are provided to the mother throughout her stay, and we strive to accommodate various dietary restrictions.

Location Benefits

The birthing center's location is perfect for several reasons. One major advantage is its closeness to the surgery center. While not all expectant mothers plan for a cesarean section, if surgical intervention becomes necessary during childbirth, the birthing center's proximity to the surgery center provides reassurance and enables quick action if required.

The birthing center is situated close to the north entrance, making it simple for patients and visitors to locate.

Breastfeeding and Car Seat Checks

Support continues beyond your departure from the birthing center. Following delivery, nurses will provide guidance on infant care and breastfeeding. We have two lactation counselors, along with Tricia Williams, a lactation consultant. Every nurse is skilled in breastfeeding techniques, and many are new mothers, offering personal insights and advice. If you wish to have lactation consultations, Tricia is available for private sessions both before and after delivery. Every patient delivering at Greater Regional Birthing Center will receive a follow-up phone call to assess the progress of both baby and mother and to address any questions.

Before families depart from the birthing center, our certified car seat technicians perform car seat checks. Additionally, OB nurses are on hand to assist in securing the infant in the car seat and to ensure the seat is properly installed in the vehicle.

Available 24/7

The Greater Regional Birthing Center is available around the clock, welcoming phone calls at any time, day or night. We are committed to assisting you throughout your entire birthing experience. If you have any questions, please call 641-782-3519.
