Oncology Rehabilitation

A cancer diagnosis can be life-altering, but you don't have to face recovery alone. At Greater Regional Health, our Oncology Rehabilitation is here to assist you in regaining strength, managing fatigue, enhancing communication, and helping you feel like yourself again during and after cancer treatment.

Our specialized therapy team, including Travis Miller, Andrea Skellenger, and Amy Downing, provides rehabilitation to address side effects from Breast Cancer, Head & Neck Cancer, and Chemotherapy.

Breast Cancer Rehabilitation

Our comprehensive Breast Cancer Rehabilitation program offers, individualized treatment to address a variety of symptoms that can accompany cancer treatment, including:

  • Limitations in range of motion or strength

  • Postural changes

  • Scar tissue restrictions

  • Lymphedema (swelling of the arm)

  • Pain, numbness, muscle spasms

  • Decreased ability to perform daily activities

Pre-Operative Therapy

With a preventative goal, treatment begins before surgery to:

  • Conduct a baseline evaluation to determine your current functional ability and arm circumference.

  • Provide you with information on how to prevent shoulder limitations through exercise and stretching following surgery.

  • Provide information on self-care, leisure activities, use of adaptive equipment and/or environmental modification you may wish to make following surgery.

  • Skincare/scar management

  • Manual lymphatic drainage (massage)

Post-Operative Therapy

Following surgery, our therapist will assess your upper extremity range of motion and strength, limb

volume, and functional limitations to develop an individualized treatment plan. This plan may include

exercise programs to restore motion and strength, posture and breathing exercises, pain and scar

management and/or lymphedema management.

Head and Neck Cancer Rehabilitation

Expert care for communication and swallowing – before, during, and after cancer treatment.

A diagnosis of head and neck cancer can profoundly affect how a person speaks, swallows,

eats, and breaths. These changes can impact not only physical health, but also confidence,

relationships, and quality of life. Head and Neck Cancer Rehabilitation includes specialized

treatment for speech and swallowing. Speech/language pathology interventions play a

critical role in recovery and long-term function.

Comprehensive Head & Neck Cancer Services

Therapy is individualized and may include:

  • Swallowing (Dysphagia) Rehabilitation: Evidence-based assessment and treatment to improve safety, efficiency, and comfort with eating and drinking, including fibrosis-informed care and exercise-based protocols.

  • Speech and Voice Therapy: Intervention for changes related to surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy, including articulation, resonance, vocal quality, and intelligibility.

  • Pre-Treatment (Prophylactic) Therapy: Early intervention designed to preserve function, reduce

complications, and improve outcomes during and after radiation, chemotherapy, and/or surgical treatment.

  • Lymphedema and Fibrosis-Informed Care: Education and treatment strategies addressing tissue changes that can impact swallowing, speech, and range of motion.

  • Patient and Caregiver Education: Clear guidance, home programs, and practical strategies to

    support long-term recovery and independence.

Chemotoxicity & Oncology Exercise Management

Chemotoxicity and Oncology Exercise Management focuses on structured rehabilitation therapy to address the effects of chemotoxicity and resulting conditions such as:

  • Chemo Induced Peripheral Neuropathy

  • Balance/Vestibular Issues

  • Weakness & Debilitation

  • Cancer Related Fatigue

Our therapist works with patients post chemo/radiation that have noted a significant change in their level of function including strength, mobility, and balance. (Patients can currently be on target/immunotherapy/ hormonal therapy.) Rehabilitation includes active participation in cardiovascular and strength training in the clinic, and then progresses to self-led exercises for a

duration of 3 months.
